Taking A Look Deeper Inside

Reflecting on Matthew 15:1-12 (NLT) today, I pondered past discussions about the treatment of individuals by church members when they chose to leave or not formally join, yet wished to occasionally participate.

How prevalent is the adherence to human traditions that contravene God’s explicit commands? For instance, certain ministries instruct against associating with those who have departed (not from Christ, but the ministry) or who opt not to become members. Consequently, such individuals may face ostracism, gossip, unjust labeling as unsaved, or exclusion unless they commit to membership.

However, Paul advises us to be wary of those who sow discord among believers (Romans 16:17-18). It’s evident, even without sight, that without personal study of Scripture and nurturing a relationship with Christ, we risk emulating those who blindly followed the Pharisees. While some traditions are beneficial, others negate God’s Word to fulfill a desire for prominence.

If a tradition directs attention away from Jesus and towards its creators, that alone is a significant warning sign. With limited time, we cannot afford to be misguided by self-serving individuals. We must remember that we are one body with diverse parts, meant to operate in harmony and mutual love, not as divided factions.
